You CAN change how you feel about public speaking

I run 2 courses for people who don't like, hate, or are terrified of public speaking and want to build their confidence.  I also offer one-to-one coaching for people who want pre-course or post course coaching to explore whether the course is right for you and issues around public speaking and presenting.  (For speakers who want to further develop their speaking skills see The Authentic Presenter courses)

taking your place your place in the world course level one

This first level 2 day course will help you to learn how to feel more at ease in front of an audience, learn to speak publicly (in a conversational manner rather than performing) and to create a connection with the audience.  I know you might be nervous but time and time again people have said "I wish I had done this course 5 or 10 years ago."

You have the chance to absorb and practise what you have learnt on the first day and work with it on the following day. It's all about learning the new fundamental skills and re-thinking what we need for public speaking. We do this in small steps, sometimes tiny steps. I know that people coming on the course will often be scared. My job is to make create a space on the course that is very supportive so that everyone feels as safe as possible. You see this reflected in the feedback (below) from participants...

Brilliantly designed to bring down stress levels. Informal, safe, friendly, kind

The facilitator put a lot of effort into making me feel relaxed
Gail

I thoroughly enjoyed the course that I was dreading beforehand!
Kate

On the course:
• You will learn to feel more comfortable in front of an audience, be able to think on your feet and become more at ease when you speak.
• You will understand what happens currently that gets in the way when we speak. We will talk about audiences and how we misunderstand what is happening in an audience. That's a key thing to understand. (see below)
•  You will learn how you can change that and then learn about the new skills (including Relational Presence) and mindsets we need to feel more comfortable in front of people.

On the second day we use what we've learnt to practise and learn who we are as speakers (sometimes it's the first time we can call ourselves a public speaker) and to focus more on content - always from a place of presence and inviting connection. A powerful place to learn to be. No previous experience required.
There is a lot of feedback about the course here.

is this you?

People write to me about fear all the time. It goes with the job! They often think it's just them who feels like this. It's not. I've worked with 6000 people saying very similar things.  It's clear that the fear of public speaking can make a significant impact on their lives. Below are the reasons why three people want to come on my course. What do you share with these three people?

To be able to give a presentation without my heart pounding, my hands shaking, rushing and stumbling over words and without feeling sick. (I usually do whatever I can to get out of doing a presentation) But basically, I need to get over my irrational fear of presentations and be able to talk and feel normal whilst presenting, because at the moment the very word ‘presentation’ panics me.
Anna

I want to talk in front of a group of people without panicking and / or my mind going blank.  In the past, I have avoided drawing attention to myself in work situations to avoid the risk of being asked to talk in front of a group of people. I would like to feel comfortable and confident speaking to a large number of people.
Robert

I'd like to be able to talk confidently in front of people when presenting instead of my voice trembling, mind going blank, shaking knees and sweating like crazy and going into a complete panic. I know I'll never be an amazing presenter but I just want to be able to get rid of my anxiety and just feel "ok" having to speak publicly.
Adele

Why is it called Taking your place?

I had a review of my course in 2009 from Gill Theodoreson. She wrote "John's course is like taking your place in the world without apologising for doing so".
I loved that quote not because I'm big-headed but I think Gill understood my work better than I did at the time! I loved that sense of stopping apologising for taking our space so much that I changed the course title. It also speaks to a wider sense of confidence, the skills we learn on the course  can be applied to life in general as well as public speaking.

does it work?

I can't guarantee changes (it depends on you as well) but my aim is to serve you as well as I can. But don't just take my word for it. I've got hundreds of people writing about their experience on the course so please take a look at the feedback from participants. There are some testimonials just below as well. They show that it really is possible to change something that has worried them for years, even in just a day or two.

My approach is to simplify the process and to show you how you have been focussing on the wrong things. We need to shift focus and strip back all the noise in our heads. That's what we do on the course. I also offer a money-back guarantee if you don't get what you want from a course.

I would recommend John's public speaking course - an inspirational and kind facilitator who helped me learn to be comfortable being myself.

I liked that fact that it was just you, a 2 rows of chairs, a flip chart and a plate of biscuits – what else did we need, your passion for the work and for the difference it can makes in people’s lives is utterly infectious and compelling.
Sarah M

Delivery style was awesome. Really, genuinely life-changing, best course I have ever been on.
Khizra

Thank you, life seems to offer a great more possibilities today.
Sarah

You have helped shift my thinking in relation to standing up in front of a group of people. This felt like one of the most valuable training courses I’ve ever been on.

understanding audiences is key...

Take a look at this audience. They look bored. But we need to re-think audiences. They listen differently to people listening to you in a conversation. Audiences listen passively. They may look judgemental and even grim and that is normal. But that is tricky if we don't know how to be relaxed when we stand in front of blank faces!
